Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, established by Government of NCT of Delhi under the provisions of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Act (9 of 1998) read with it’s Amendment in 1999, is an affiliating and teaching University that aims to facilitate and promote studies, research and extension work in emerging areas of higher education with focus on professional education in the disciplines of engineering, technology, architecture, management, medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing, education, law, journalism and mass communication, etc and also to achieve excellence in these and related fields and other matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Functioning of the University commenced with the joining of Prof. K.K. Aggarwal as its first Vice-Chancellor in December, 1998.

The University is currently functioning from the Kashmere Gate, Delhi. The University has taken possession of land measuring 60 acres at Dwarka (West Delhi) for setting up a State-of-Art Campus of the University with ultra-modern facilities. It has also been decided to establish another Campus of the University in East Delhi and possession of land measuring 19 acres has been taken over opposite Surajmal Vihar, Karkardooma for this purpose. The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of the Dwarka Campus has already been performed on September 1, 2004 by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri Arjun Singh along with the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Delhi and Chancellor of the University, Sh. B.L. Joshi and Hon’ble Chief Minister, Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dixit. And, the further work is in progress.

The University has constituted its statutory bodies such as the Court, the Board of Management, the Planning Board, the Board of Affiliation, the Academic Council and the Finance Committee to ensure the development of the University in the right direction over a period of time. To facilitate the assigned role by these Statutory bodies, the members of these bodies are the persons of eminence from varied fields and disciplines.
