The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli, situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery, was started as a joint and co-operative venture of Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu during 1964 with a view to cater to the needs of man-power in technology for the Country.

The College has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. Later in 2003 it was granted Deemed University Status. RECT was registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 . NITT was registered under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975. Formerly RECT's management was looked after by the Board of Governors consisting of Honorable Minister for Education, Government of Tamil Nadu as Chairman, and Members from Government of Tamil Nadu, Government of India, AICTE, UGC, IIT, Chennai and Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. The Chairman of NITT is R. Seshasayee.

With students drawn from all the States of our Country and faculty recruited through open advertisement throughout the Country , the Institution has an all India character . Ever since its establishment, the institution has registered speedy progress and it now offers Under Graduate Courses in eleven branches and Post Graduate Courses in twenty two disciplines of Engineering &Technology besides Ph.D. in all the departments. The college enjoys autonomous status for all the Post Graduate Courses and Under Graduate Courses continuously for the past 22 and 14 years respectively.

Because of this rich experience, this institution was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India. Residential facilities are provided for most of the students and staff in the spacious college campus of about 800 acres. Essential basic amenities like Hospital, Post & Telegraph, Telecom Center, fully computerized State Bank of India branch with ATM facility, Book stall, Reprographic Center, Canteen, Co-op. Stores etc. are also available in the Campus. Laboratories and Workshops with sophisticated and modernized machineries/equipment are available.

NITT has Campus-wide Local Area Network with number of systems to provide computer training to 900 students at a time, 2mbps Internet connection through STPi are available in the Octagon computer center. This center is open 24 hours a day for use by students and staff.

Facilities for extracurricular activities like NCC, NSS, Students Chapters of IEEE, IE Sports & Games with Modern Gymnasium are also available in the campus. The Department of Training and placement has been doing excellent work for the placement of students right from the inception. The Alumni of this institution have excelled in various spheres Placement of activity and are positioned very well in a number of leading Government, Public Sector & Private Organizations.

How To Get To NITT

NITT is in Tiruchirapalli (also know as Trichy or Tiruchy). It is located about 16 km from Tiruchurapalli Jn / Central Bustand on the Trichy-Thanjavur Highway. The simplest and most economical way to reach NITT is by bus. Any city Bus at the Tiruchirapalli Jn will take you to the central bus stand. Board Thanjavur bound mofussiful or route bus. The journey time from Trichy will be around 45 minutes. The executive way of reaching NITT will be hiring a taxi. Taxis may charge around Rs.200/- NITT campus has private taxi & auto service:

For auto (within the campus only): 98424-65530, 98424-86691 (The auto charge for reaching any place within the NIT campus will be Rs.15/-.

Trichy is connected by road to Chennai (320 km), Madurai (142 km) and to all major towns in South India by regular bus services. Tiruchirapalli is an important junction on the Southern Railway. It connects Madras, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tuticorin, Tirupati and Rameswaram on the meter gauge, and Bangalore, Coimbatore, Cochin and Mangalore on the broad gauge. It has an international airport, 7 kms away, and is connected with Chennai (Madras), Madurai, Singapore, Colombo, Kuwait, Sharjah and Bangalore. Indian Airlines connects Trichy with Chennai, Sharjah, Kuwait and Colombo. Air Lanka Service connects Tiruchirapalli with Colombo.
