The Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar was established on October 20,1995 by an Act of the Legislature of the State of Haryana with the objectives ‘to facilitate and promote studies and research in emerging areas of higher education with focus on new frontiers of technology, pharmacy, environmental studies, non-conventional energy sources and management studies and also to achieve excellence in these and connected fields’. It was formally inaugurated on November 1,1995. It is named after Guru Jambheshwar Ji Maharaj, a saint environmentalist of 15th century.

The University enjoys a rare distinction of getting recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) for recognition of degrees, on 11.1.1996 and, under section 12(B) of the UGC Act to be eligible for central assistance, on 7.2.1997 i.e., within 15 months of its coming into being. The University opted for accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous organization of the University Grants Commission, in 2001-02. As a result of the exercise, the NAAC accredited this University at "A" level (institutional score 85%) among the Universities for a period of five-years beginning 2002-03.

The University is situated over a sprawling area of about 372 acres. The campus is laid out with picturesque landscape, numerous buildings of various sizes and wide road network. It presents a spectacle of harmony in architecture and natural beauty. A number of buildings like six Teaching Blocks, four Hostels, Shopping Complex, VIP Guest House, Faculty House, Vice-Chancellor’s Residence, Administrative Block, Jambheshwar Bhawan, Energy Park, own Water Works, University Library, University Health Centre and 137 residential houses have already come up. The University has its own extension counter of a nationalised bank and a post office in the Shopping Complex. New buildings in the form of one more teaching block, two more Hostels, Students’ Café , Engg. Branch office, Multipurpose Hall and some more residential houses are under construction. More construction activities like Staff quarters, Teaching Block No. 7 and 8, additional roads linking new building, Working Women’s Hostel, Registrar’s Residence, Swimming Pool, play grounds, four-laning of road from gate No.3, sewer line, Animal House, Herbal Park and extension of VIP Guest House are proposed to be commenced soon.
