INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE

Birla Institute of Applied Science, (BIAS) was established in 1989 as a sister Institution by Birla Institute of Scientific Research, founded by the industrialist late Sri B.M. Birla for imparting technical educational in the hill areas of Kumaon region, now in the newly formed Uttaranchal State. The institute in spread over an area of about 10 hectares and is situated in the picturesque valley of Bhimtal at a height of 1370 M above mean sea level. It is about 22 Km. away from the nearest railhead Kathgodam and 22 km. from Nainital. Being in the hill and yet near to the plains the Institute is developing fast as a good academic center of the region. It has own administrative building and complete infrastructure facilities. Besides the Director. Presently there are 14 full time faculty members with back up support of visiting faculty from the well Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra Ranchi and its extension centers.

The Institute is presently affiliated to Kumaon University, Nainital and has been conducting MCA degree program since 1989. It was the first institute in this hill region to do so, with the initial support coming from the then U.P. State and the Planning Commission, Govt. of India, In the past, seven batches have obtained MCA degree from the institute and they have found 100 percent placement on completion of course with around 60 percent of the students being abroad as on date. The present sanctioned intake is 30.

In a short span of time, the Institute has set up reasonably good Computer, Electrical and Electronics Laboratories. Modern Library with adequate number of books is a available for use of students and faculty. The Institute has net connectivity through VSAT. Computer lab and Internet facilities are available to the students round the clock. The Institute has also signed a MOU with I.B.M. under their training program in colleges, whereby additional training to the faculty and students is being made available.

All the students reside in the campus in modern well –equipped Hostels for boys and girls with proper mess facilities. Extra curricular are managed by different student bodies like the Sports Society, Cultural Society, Highlanders Club, Techno- forum etc. MCA (Master of Computer Applications) : 3 Year (6 Semester), Full Time Residential

Program Intake: 30 students

The academic calendar is split into 2 semesters. The odd semesters start in August and end in December, while the even semesters are from February to June.

It may be worth mentioning that, in addition to the normal curriculum, special certification programmes are also available. These include DB2 UDB V6.1/V7.1 User Certification, Visual Age for JAVA Certification, “Websphere Studio Application Development” and “Eclipse” Certification of IBM. A CISCO Local Academy for CCNA (CISCO Certified Network Associate) Certification is also functional at the Instituite.
