VELLORE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, by Mr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Government of Tamil Nadu, it was promoted by the North Arcot Educational and Charitable Trust. The institute was conferred the "Deemed University" status in recognition of its academic excellence, by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, in June 2001. The founder Mr. G. Viswanathan is the Chancellor.

Constant monitoring by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India, has ensured accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), Government of India, its grades reflecting the exceptional standards the Institute continuously maintains. Started initially with three undergraduate engineering courses – Civil, Mechanical and Electronics and Communication – VIT today comprises five constituent colleges and interdisciplinary centres offering two dozen specialized programmes to over 6071 students, one fourth of them women. The faculties, over 307 strong are committed to creating a congenial, student-friendly environment that facilitates interaction with and among the students, leading to a better grasp of subjects studied. They also adopt an international business-oriented approach to education that enables students to meet today’s emerging global educational needs and function effectively in their chosen professions.

Vellore Engineering College, now VIT in 1999 was awarded the ISO 9002 certificate for three years by the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of the Netherlands, the first educational institute in India to achieve this recognition.

VIT is located at Vellore, a district headquarters town between the two important cities of Chennai (formerly Madras) and Bangalore (known as the Silicon Valley of the South Asia). Its campus, spread over 250 acres on the Ranipet-Katpadi Road, facilitating easy access to Ranipet, a well-known industrial centre, provides an ideal environment for both study and industrial interaction.
